Category B

Chess & Mates Festival

Category B is intended for casual players, generally with elo ratings of 1500 and below.

Basic Information

The chess tournament check-in will start at 9:45 AM and the tournament will conclude at 5 PM with a lunch break of one hour (12:30 AM - 1:30 PM). The tournament will be held in the beautiful Saint Peter's Abbey (Sint-Pietersabdij) in Ghent.

The players will be split up into 2 categories according to strength:

Category A is for players with an elo over 1500 (online or fide).
These players will play inside the Kapitelzaal.

Category B is for players with an elo below 1500 (online or fide).
This category will play outside, on the square inside the Abbey.

Both categories will play 7 rounds with a 10 minutes + 3 secondes time control.

The first three players in each category will be awarded at the award ceremony. The buchholz system will be used as a tie-breaking system. In addition, and similar to our previous tournament, prizes will be giving away through lottery during the rounds.

How to get there

The tournament will be held at the abbey. Check in will happen at the check-in counter of the abbey. The entrace of the abbey, is at Saint-Peter's square (Sint Pietersplein) on the right hand side when facing the church. The garden area will be closed until after the first round, so entry from the garden is not recommended.

Parking is possible under the Square or in the Sint-Amandsstraat and the student area behind the square. On Sundays, parking in the streets is free of charge.

Food

There will be a possility of lunch at 12:30 in the afternoon with 2 food trucks serving fantastic food. There are tasty Burgers by Rebel Events catering, and vegan dumplings by Davai. Davai was voted best foodtruck on the Pukkelpop 2024 foodcourt. The foodtrucks are located outside, in the abbey gardens.

Rules

While regular tournament rules apply, some additional ground rules are in place to ensure that we can keep our schedule.

1. Don't Be Late!

There are a lot of players, and it's impossible to extend our schedule for practical reasons. So, unfortunately, if you are late for the check-in (9:45-10-15), you will probably not be able to play in the first round. So don't be late!

2. Rounds start at the scheduled time

The rounds start at the scheduled time. These times will be displayed all over the abbey, and we will have to keep these timings. That means if you don't

3. Arbiters have to keep the schedule

In the unlikely event that a game keeps going on outside of the 30 minutes scheduled for each round, the arbiter has the right to end the game to ensure we stay on schedule.

Have fun, and bring some friends!

There are many side activities throughout the day, which are free for everyone. These activities will be held inside the garden.
